3 questions for… Carlos Irizarry, General Manager, La Factoria, San Juan – Puerto Rico
La Factoría is not an ordinary bar. The unmarked location is full of secret passages that lead to the six bars, each curated with a different ambiance and drink menu. Whether you seek to enjoy craft cocktails, dance the night away to live music, or simply relax in good company, they got you.
La Factoria is humbled to be among The World’s 50 Best Bars for 5 years in a row, and for their strong alliance with the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation. It is the only bar in Latin America to be named and/or nominated for the TOTC Spirited Award, TW50BB and James Beard Award all in the same year (2018).They offer craft cocktails and an exquisite bar menu. Live salsa music and House DJs.
We talked to Carlos Irizarry, Manager of La Factoria
Thinking about your menu spontaneously, which drink comes to your mind first and why?
The drink that comes to mind is The Peligroso, it is not necessarily the most popular of our cocktails, being the Lavender Mule the most popular. But The Peligroso has an amazing complexity in the combination of italian amaros and caribbean sour and it showcases the powerful expressions of Puerto Rican aged rum.
What makes the location of your bar special?
La Factoria is located in la Calle San Sebastían’s corner of Calle San José. Since the late 50’s Hijos de Borinquen (the original name of the bar) was a hub of cultural expression and a celebration of the artists and bohemian characteristics of the Old San Juan Community. We feel very honored and proud to be serving our drinks in such an iconic location. That is the reason why we never took out the sign of the legendary Hijos de Borinquén (which means sons of borinquen, indigenous word for the island).
Why would you recommend a visit to your bar?
It is all about the energy, the flavor, the vibrancy and the experience in general that La Factoria emulates. It is something that you just have to live, feel and experience for yourself.
